 Definition of luck

Still remember Jerry ? The first few post of this blog, I mention about him pursuing his dream of being in the customer service line. I recently met up with him and got to know that he has change his job from an air Steward to a restaurant manager. He did not have the qualification neither he have the experience but what he has is a bit of “luck”. Which in my definition means when hard work meets opportunities.

He got “lucky” while serving one of his passenger on board the budget airline which is the boss of a group of restaurant in singapore. Though its only a budget airline, Jerry treated all his passenger like a first class treatment. He put in his 101% effort in serving and definitely with a smile. At the end of the flight, that passenger was very pleased with his customer service and gave him her name card and it wrote ” Hi Jerry, I really admired your service and would like you to invite you to come for an interview to be my staff in my company. Give me a call”

Hard work does pays and it pays in different way and form. This incident truly illustrate my definition of luck. If you want to be lucky, Work hard for it !!!

 I CAN

Ever wonder whats the power of love and self-belief? Ever doubt yourself in doing something. Have you ever give up on something that you wanted to do but due to some setback you gave up on your dream and hope?

If you have, take a look at this video – the love of a father, determination of his son.

My tears will roll whenever I see this video:

This is the story of an amazing father : Dick Hoyt and an inspiring son Rick Hoyt. Rick at birth suffered from Cerebral Palsy- a cut off oxygen to the brain during birth causing disabilities.

The strong belief of Dick Hoyt to raise Rick just like any other childern was amazing. He sent Rick to local public school and  graduated from university. It was amazing. It proves that as long as you want to do something it can definitely be done.

Rick communciate through an interactive computer which he called it “My Communicator” which a cursor would move across a screen filled with rows of letters and when the cursor highlighted a letter that rick wanted, he would click a switch with the side of his head. It is real difficult to do it and you really need real patience to do it.

In 1977, Rick told Dick that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a local lacrosse player who had been paralysed in an accident. Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair. This is where their adventures begins.

Rick told his dad that he didn’t feel handicapped when they were competing. That statement spur Dick in all the runs they particiapted. Till date they have completed in 224 Triathlons, 6 Ironman, 5 Half Iron Man, 20 Duathlons, 65 Marathons, 25 Boston Marathons. Its definitely amazing.

The journey that Rick and Dick took its amazing. The video has an important message called “I CAN” It proves that human can do wonders, despite all the problems and odds that the Hoyt family has faced they know what they really want and go for it.

There is nothing that is impossible, as long as you say I CAN. BE that someone. Be that inspiration. You CAN definitely CAN.

 What’s stopping you?

There are times where you really want to do something big in your life but many a times you are often hit with a big no cause you think that you have no capital, you have no luck, you don’t think you can do it … so on and so forth …

I recently went to Bugis to buy some stuff, something caught my attention. It was a bike filled with international flags and a helmet which was on the floor filled with money in it. Then I saw a lot of photos of lined up on the floor of different countries. There was a poster that wrote : “My Gas (Petrol) Comes from your donations. If you like what I do. Please support to keep going” I went closer and than did I realised its actually the famous Mr. Vladimir A. Yarets. This guy is deaf and mute and his ambition is to travel round the world with his bike. He started his journey on 27th May 2000 in Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus and YES his now in Singapore and he is starting his journey up north and hoping to reach Beijing for the olympics games in August.

His journey was not as smooth as everyone thought it is, he was hospitalised on october 2003 due to an accident in america. A kind family in america nursed him back to health and his back in action again to complete his dream. He did not give up even when he met with adversity.

The dream to travel the world

Me with Mr Yarets

If you see him in Singapore, remember to make a donation and support his movement.

His spirits of inspiring the disabled that even he is mute and deaf he is able to do extraordinary things that not every human beings can. All he do is to take actions of his goals and dreams. He has no resources neither money, all he has is only courage to take this big step. So if you are a man/women with no disabilities what is stopping you in achieving your goals in life?
