 44 Years of Independence

NDP 09

Wanted to watch this year NDP, so ask Ms Boo to help me to do up a ndp pass for me but of cause in return I need to do public duty …. =)

This year is our nation 44 years of independence and a year where lots of uncertainty lies ahead for us. The economy, H1N1 diseases and etc…  It has not been a good year afterall… Well the mood for this year NDP is definitely not dampen by the negative outlook and the spirit is high to the max. This year NDP, the Singapore story is told in 10 chapters… and using the Singapore Pledge as a theme.

What struck me most is the video showing the speech by Minister Mentor Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, he said ” This Country belongs to all of us. We made this country from nothing, from mud flats. It is man, human skill, human effort which made this possible” “Over 100 years ago, this was a mud-flat, swamp. Today, this a modern city, Ten years from now, this will be a metropolis. Never Fear.”

He made this promise in September 1965, 44 years ago…  Today, Singapore is indeed a metropolis, a city of opportunity and a growing adult. Seeing a progress of the nation it makes one wonder how could this be possible just 44 years and see such great improvement in our countries…

PM Lee said this in his first rally to singapore ” You remember sometime back, some of us will, our first National Day Parades, the first few. There were no fancy lighting effects, no video linkups, no goodie bags, just a parade, contingents marching one after the other. Soldiers from first Battalion, 2nd Battalion, 20th Battalion, 100th Battalion plus one or two mass displays, lion and dragon dances and the school bands provided the marching music.  I was one of them officer cadet.  One year it rained, 1968. After the parade had formed up in the Padang.  Those of you who were there will never forget it.  It was a downpour, we froze, we were drenched.  Our instruments had to be turned upside down to pour the water out.  We watched to see if we stood or if we ran for cover.  Nobody ran for cover, we shivered but we stood there and we marched with pride.  Along the route the crowds gathered to cheer us.  So, this was a people determined to succeed and we did.

It is in the spirit in us as Singaporean that make us who we are… Never fear the challenge, we just carry on and move on … no matter what lies ahead we knew that if we are determined enough we will definitely suceed.

Once again I wish Singapore a happy 44th Birthday !

 5 more minutes

Hi Guys,

I came across this story that I read off the net, which I find it meaningful and would like to share with you :

Just Five More Minutes

While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground.

“That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.

“He’s a fine looking boy” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the white dress.”

Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter. “What do you say we go, Melissa?”

Melissa pleaded, “Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes.”

The man nodded and Melissa continued to ride her bike to her heart’s content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his daughter. “Time to go now?”

Again Melissa pleaded, “Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes.”

The man smiled and said, “OK.”

“My, you certainly are a patient father,” the woman responded.

The man smiled and then said, “Her older brother Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d give anything for just five more minutes with him. I’ve vowed not to make the same mistake with Melissa.

She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch her play.”

Life is all about making priorities, what are your priorities?

Give someone you love 5 more minutes of your time today.

 Making a difference !

Shall update more on the why in my next post !

 Time is running out . . .

It has been a long time since I blogged. Perhaps too many things happened recently. One of my auntie (my father’s Sister in law) passed away. I was not really extremely closed with her but she is just one of my relatives that I respected. It has been a long time since I cried for someone.

When sending her off the last journey to the crematorium, a lot of things came into my mind. I realised a fact that time is definitely running out. I look back 15 yrs ago I was still on a trip in  thailand with my auntie but now she is on her way to another side. Time is really short and its definitely not waiting for anyone. This just means that my parents are getting old each day as well. Sometimes perhaps we are too busy with things and slowly forget to say I love you to our parents or look into their eyes and say a big Thank You for things that they have done for us. Do it now … you never know what will happen. Life is so unexpected, losing 1 friend and a relative in 1 month is definitely not a good experience.

Treasure your loves ones and friends, if you have not contacted them for many years, start to find them back for a good chat and coffee. Remember do not regret, so do it !

 I CAN

Ever wonder whats the power of love and self-belief? Ever doubt yourself in doing something. Have you ever give up on something that you wanted to do but due to some setback you gave up on your dream and hope?

If you have, take a look at this video – the love of a father, determination of his son.

My tears will roll whenever I see this video:

This is the story of an amazing father : Dick Hoyt and an inspiring son Rick Hoyt. Rick at birth suffered from Cerebral Palsy- a cut off oxygen to the brain during birth causing disabilities.

The strong belief of Dick Hoyt to raise Rick just like any other childern was amazing. He sent Rick to local public school and  graduated from university. It was amazing. It proves that as long as you want to do something it can definitely be done.

Rick communciate through an interactive computer which he called it “My Communicator” which a cursor would move across a screen filled with rows of letters and when the cursor highlighted a letter that rick wanted, he would click a switch with the side of his head. It is real difficult to do it and you really need real patience to do it.

In 1977, Rick told Dick that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a local lacrosse player who had been paralysed in an accident. Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair. This is where their adventures begins.

Rick told his dad that he didn’t feel handicapped when they were competing. That statement spur Dick in all the runs they particiapted. Till date they have completed in 224 Triathlons, 6 Ironman, 5 Half Iron Man, 20 Duathlons, 65 Marathons, 25 Boston Marathons. Its definitely amazing.

The journey that Rick and Dick took its amazing. The video has an important message called “I CAN” It proves that human can do wonders, despite all the problems and odds that the Hoyt family has faced they know what they really want and go for it.

There is nothing that is impossible, as long as you say I CAN. BE that someone. Be that inspiration. You CAN definitely CAN.
